Solid Waste Management

Environmental management

Although in many countries there is increasing concern regarding the environmental risks of landfilling and many people believe that separate collection and recycling represent a correct solution, most of the waste produced worldwide is currently disposed of in landfills.

Many industrialised countries are approaching the problem of waste disposal with a new strategy. The main aim of this strategy is to minimize the environmental impact, saving raw materials by promoting resource recovery and reducing the amount of refuse to be disposed.

The objective of the current waste management policy should be that future generations should not be forced to deal with wastes of their ancestors.

One of the most difficult operational problems faced by local authorities in any large city is the collection of waste. The collection problem is especially crucial for cities in developing countries due to the hot weather and the not enough avialable resources.

The appropriate method for waste collection depends on the properties, composition of waste and on the selected waste management strategy. The collection system can be considered as one of the most important processes of an integrated waste management system.
